Anton Yelchin - Star Trek Beyond (2016)
Tragic news hit when Yelchin was fatally pinned by his own car back in 2016. But just over a month later, Star Trek Beyond blasted onto screens with him as Chekov. The crew straight up honored him by not recasting the role. He had a few other movies dropping after, proving his star just kept shining.
James Van Der Beek - The Gates (Upcoming)
James Van Der Beek lost his battle with cancer in early 2026, but hang tight - his last thriller The Gates is gearing up to hit theaters soon. He plays a creepy pastor causing major trouble after a witness sees a murder. Creepy and cool, right? Plus, fans know him best from Dawson’s Creek.
Heath Ledger - The Dark Knight (2008)
Heath Ledger’s Joker was so legendary it earned him an Oscar after he passed away at just 28. The Dark Knight premiered after he left us, and let’s be honest, his Joker was basically a walking nightmare you couldn’t look away from. He also left some work in progress that got finished by some big star pals.
Chadwick Boseman - Ma Rainey's Black Bottom (2020)
Chadwick Boseman fought a secret fight with cancer and sadly left us in 2020. But wow, his final performance as Levee in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom was a knockout. The film dropped on Netflix months after he passed and even snagged him some awards and an Oscar nod. A real powerhouse send-off.
Paul Walker - Furious 7 (2015)
When Paul Walker tragically died in a car crash, the Fast & Furious fam had to get creative. He’d finished most of his scenes in Furious 7, so they brought in his brothers and some fancy CGI to wrap things up. The movie and the song See You Again became massive tributes to him. Fast cars and full hearts!
John Candy - Canadian Bacon (1995)
John Candy dropped his hilarious magic with a heart attack in '94 while on set. Luckily, his last movies Wagons East and Canadian Bacon hit screens after he was gone - both sweet goodbyes to a comedy legend. He left a lot of laughs behind and plans for more, which just never got to happen.
Raul Julia - Street Fighter (1994)
Raul Juliá finished filming his role as the villain M. Bison in Street Fighter, even while battling cancer. The film came out right after he passed in '94, giving his kids and fans one final dose of his powerhouse acting. Fun fact: he took the role because his kids loved the game.
Phil Hartman - Small Soldiers (1998)
Phil Hartman’s sudden loss shocked everyone, but his voice work as a dad in Small Soldiers hit theaters just a couple months later. Everyone missed the SNL and NewsRadio star big time. He was even supposed to voice a famous cartoon character, but fate had other plans.
Bernie Mac - Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa (2008) [voice only]
Bernie Mac passed from pneumonia in 2008, but he kept the laughs coming posthumously. He voiced the lion Zuba in Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, and a few other movies dropped after. The comedy legend left a bunch of smiles for us, with a career that fans still celebrate.
Philip Seymour Hoffman - The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Parts 1 & 2 (2014/2015)
Hoffman’s overdose in 2014 was a huge shock. Luckily, he’d filmed most of his part as Plutarch in Mockingjay. The director got clever and rewrote a scene to honor him rather than replace him. Both parts of Mockingjay carry his spirit, making them a solid farewell to an acting powerhouse.
Carrie Fisher - Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017)
Leia herself, Carrie Fisher, sadly passed in 2016 after a heart emergency on a plane. But she nailed her role in The Last Jedi before that, even helping write her own killer lines! She also popped up in The Rise of Skywalker thanks to some clever editing. Leia lives on!
Luke Perry - Once Upon A Time In Hollywood (2019)
Luke Perry, known for charming us on TV, passed away after a massive stroke in 2019. Thankfully, his last movie, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, came out later that year. He played a real 60s actor, giving us one final cool cameo. His TV show Riverdale also dedicated episodes to him.
Eric Dane - Family Secrets (Upcoming)
Eric Dane fought ALS but sadly passed in 2026. His final thriller, Family Secrets, is still in the works and promises a dark, dramatic ride. Fans of Euphoria remember him well, and this movie will be his curtain call on the big screen.
Charlbi Dean Kriek - Triangle Of Sadness (2022)
Charlbi Dean Kriek passed away young in 2022 from a rare infection, shortly before her movie Triangle of Sadness hit big. She starred as a model influencer in this sharp satire, which won a Palme d’Or and snagged Oscar noms. The director said working with her was an honor and a big loss.
Jill Clayburgh - Bridesmaids (2011)
Jill Clayburgh passed in 2010 after a long illness but left behind her part as the hilarious mom in Bridesmaids, which came out months later and crushed it at the box office. The two-time Oscar nominee made sure her last screen moments were loaded with laughs and heart.
