Hey, wanna take a super fun trip through some wild old maps? From fitting blue whales into the Vatican to what the world looked like when Manhattan was called New Amsterdam - this list has it all. Let’s dive in!
If you ever thought "maps are just boring geography stuff," think again. These vintage maps are packed with weird facts, historical surprises, and even some mythical creatures. So buckle up and get ready to see the world like never before.

Maps aren’t just about finding places. Old maps tell stories, mix fact with fantasy, and sometimes just look plain weird. Like the Borgia Map from the 1700s, which has humans, animals, and turns the world upside down (literally - south is at the top!).
The Borgia Map also says North Russia was like a superhero land where dogs beat lions, and griffins hung out in the 'Hyperborean Mountains.' It even tells the tale of the phoenix, a mythical bird that’s basically an ancient flaming superhero reborn from ashes.
Oh, and most maps back then put Jerusalem smack in the middle and faced east, but Borgia flipped the script by pointing south - probably just to look fancy.
Not all old maps are as bonkers. The Carta Pisana, made in the 1200s, nailed the Mediterranean Sea's coastlines like a boss. It was so accurate, historians still give it props for being the medieval GPS of its day.
Then there’s the Hereford Mappa Mundi - like the medieval Pinterest board of maps. It’s huge and packed with Heaven, Hell, and loads of religious drama. Geography? Not so much. More like fantasy meets propaganda.
On the flip side, the Fra Mauro Mappa Mundi (1450) was way more legit. It’s basically the OG Google Maps for Europe and Africa before explorers even hit the Cape of Good Hope. It’s so close to reality, it’s wild!
If you’ve seen the "Blue Marble" Earth pic from Apollo 17, Fra Mauro’s map is kinda like Earth’s baby photo. Not perfect, but you get the gist of what our planet looks like. All thanks to sailors’ stories from the 1400s!
So, what’s your fave? The whacky Borgia map? The spot-on Carta Pisana? Drop your picks and any cool maps you know in the comments. And if you want even more maps that make you go "Whoa!", just keep scrolling!
