We had a quick chat with Dave about his latest dog comic book, how he picks his favorite comics, and why dogs are just hilarious. He said, “The cartoons chosen are a mix of my faves and the ones people online went crazy for. It’s wild to see which comics catch on because sometimes I’m surprised by what becomes popular. That feedback really helps when I sit down to make more dog jokes!”

When we asked what makes dogs such endless comedy gold, Dave shared, “Dogs are amazing and perfect for funny comics. I love drawing them the most, and every dog acts like its own little universe. Plus, most folks know a lot about dog behavior (even if they don't have one), so there’s tons of stuff to joke about. And having worked with BarkBox comics for years, dog's quirks feel like second nature to me now.”

Curious about his book’s goofy title, he laughed and said, “That cover started as just another comic for Speed Bump. My editor, Lucas, thought it would make a killer book title - and he nailed it. A friend pointed out it really hits the funny vibe of how people feel right now, which I totally agree with. So, not my genius but a happy accident!”

After 30+ years making Speed Bump comics, Dave says, “Turning simple ideas into something funny never gets old. The thrill hits every time when inspiration strikes. And connecting with people - even if it’s just for a few seconds when they read a comic - is pretty special. That’s the magic of it all.”
