When I was 16, a teacher at the airport was chatting me up and being weird. Then a Black woman knitting nearby swooped over, sat next to me, and basically claimed me as her own. When the teacher tried to take his seat back, she told him, 'Today, this is MY child.' Absolute hero energy. I don’t even know her name, but I'm forever grateful.

My boyfriend dumped me over text when I was sick, and she swooped in, took my phone, wiped my tears, and said, 'No raggedy man is gonna mess with your healing tonight!' She got me top-notch snacks and meds. I still think about her kindness like it’s magic.
