Photographer Sophie Gamand snapped these charming pups with delicate flowers, flipping the script on the usual tough-guy image of pit bulls. Ready for some seriously cute and powerful pics? Let’s go!
Originally, Sophie wanted to shine a light on shelter dogs, and guess what? The project blew up online! It helped tons of these sweet dogs find new homes and got people thinking twice about those old stereotypes. Plus, the photos show just how gentle these big-hearted dogs really are.

We had a quick chat with Sophie Gamand about her famous series, “Flower Power: Pit Bulls of the Revolution.” Spoiler: It’s all about showing how these big dogs can be total softies beneath their tough exterior.
Sophie says, “Making this project was a wild ride. It wasn’t just about photos - it was about meeting each dog, hearing their stories, and showing the world who they really are. Now with AI everywhere, who knows if projects like this will happen the same way. But back then, we got messy, made flower crowns by hand, and had some unforgettable moments.”
When it comes to how people see pit bulls now, Sophie noticed a shift thanks to the project. Shelters even saw more adoptions! She says it’s all about remembering that each dog is unique, not just a breed label. More cities are ditching bans on pit bulls, which is a step in the right direction, but there’s still work to do worldwide.
Sophie works a lot with shelters and says the situation is tough. Lots of dogs (and cats) are stuck in shelters longer because it’s harder to find homes, especially for big dogs. It’s a bit of a shelter crisis out there.
Also, Sophie isn’t thrilled about some of the pet trends. French bulldogs got super popular, but breeding practices for them can be shady. She wishes more people would choose shelter pets instead - it’s way better for the dogs in need.
Despite everything, Sophie’s hopeful that her flower-crowned pups keep inspiring folks to open their hearts and meet shelter dogs as the awesome individuals they are.
