Once upon a dial-up, AOL made it super easy for everyone to jump online. It was like your internet starter pack in the ’90s.
Thanks to Professor Mar Hicks, we know AOL basically handed the internet to the everyday folks like a digital welcome mat.
Mar says AOL was like that friendly neighbor who explains the crazy new thing so you’re not totally freaked out.
It made the internet less scary and more of a neighborhood to explore.
And who could forget the iconic dial-up noise? It sounded like two robots having a screaming match to say hello. Yeah, not the ringtone you want.
That screechy ‘handshake’ was your computer making pals with the internet over a phone line. Slow and spotty, but sweet!
Then came broadband in the late ’90s, which meant no more robot screams and way more Netflix bingeing (well, eventually).
The Pew folks said broadband was a game changer for how often people visited the web.
Mar even says the internet stopped being a 'place' and turned into a utility, like water or electricity. Sorry, AOL dial-up, your era is over.
