Boss’s Gift: A Head-Scratcher
Some of these products really got me wondering how a tiny tweak can turn a cool idea into a total dud. To get the scoop, we chit-chatted with product designer Sharanya Salehittal. She says a design tanks when it forgets it’s made for real humans, not just fancy computer mockups.
In other words, if it doesn’t work for regular folks doing regular things, it’s a nope. Designers sometimes trip up by designing for their own genius brains instead of actual users, Sharanya says.

Sharanya spilled the tea on why designs fail: "The biggest oops is solving a problem nobody has. Like, fancy gadgets trying to fix tiny hassles. When you make something super complex for a simple job, users just scratch their heads and ask 'Why?'."
Also, if you need a novel just to figure out how to turn the thing on, game over. Good products should blend right into your daily groove without a fuss or a how-to guide.

She also pointed out that making stuff look prettier doesn't always win. Like, if your chic mouse has its charging port underneath, it’s totally useless plugged in. Beauty should never get in the way of basic use.
Plus, a design that falls apart the moment you drop it or toss it in your bag? Nope. Products gotta survive real life - sun, drops, and your clumsy moments included.

See-Through Surprise Egg? Nope, Not So Surprising
On the flip side, the best products quietly rock your world without demanding attention. They’re so easy and natural to use, you hardly notice them. No manuals necessary, just pure “I got this!” vibes.
Great design guides your hands without spelling everything out. Buttons, shapes, and textures all team up to make it feels like second nature.

According to Sharanya, winning designs stick to their job and don’t get all fancy-schmancy with extra useless features just to look cool. They solve one problem really well, every single time.
Also, the best designs know when to chill out and not hog space with loud colors or flashing lights. They keep it clean, simple, and fade into the background when you’re done.

Honesty and toughness are key too. A great product doesn’t pretend to be fancy or trick you. It’s built to last, not just last season. It’s there for the long haul, not a flashy one-hit-wonder.
At the end of the day, good design is all about making your life just a little easier. When that balance is nailed, you get a tool you can rely on every time.

We had to ask if Sharanya ever designed a flop. She laughed and said, "Oh yes, more times than I can count! But that’s the fun part - you get to try again and make something awesome. Life’s basically a big trial-and-error game, right?"
