Caught Myself Using My Narc Mom's Guilt Trip, But Stopped!

Caught Myself Using My Narc Mom's Guilt Trip, But Stopped!

anon , camilo jimenez Report

Last fall my 18 month old daughter fell and cracked her skull (she's quite the climber). We spent the whole day at the ER getting scans and tests. Honestly, not how I planned my Saturday.
Out loud, I joked, “I sure hope you’re grateful I’m spending all day here with you - you owe me big!”
I immediately realized I sounded *just like my narcissistic mom,* who always made me feel like I needed to pay her back for her care. I felt ashamed.
Even though my daughter was too young to understand, I righted myself and told her, “No! I *love* being here with you, making sure you’re safe and healthy. You owe me nothing for doing my job. I love being your mom.”
Breaking the guilt-trip and emotional blackmail cycle with my daughter? Feels fantastic.

Disowned for Being Gay, But Now My Mom Wants Forgiveness... and My Money!

    hayyy_jude , karlyukav Report

I was kicked out because I’m gay. It hurt, but with distance, I realized how messed up they were and that I’m better off without them. Sometimes I still miss them, but peace is peace.
My cousin keeps me updated. They’re spreading wild lies about me - calling me a runaway, a pervert, even blaming me for all their family’s chaos.
My brother passed away from an overdose and they didn’t even tell me. Six siblings, and the family is falling apart.
Now, my mom says she wants to forgive me, thinks I should be grateful, and demands that I support them financially when my dad retires. Classic narcissistic double standards: I’m evil for loving men, but they’re saints despite threats and abuse.
    It’s madness. Girl, bye.

Got A Warning For Reminding A Coworker Some Parents Don’t Deserve Adult Kids

Got A Warning For Reminding A Coworker Some Parents Don’t Deserve Adult Kids

    firelord-lee , Getty Images Report

I hear coworkers judge adult kids who don’t visit their parents. One time, a coworker even confronted such a kid.
We had a resident with 5 kids: 2 never visited, and the other 3 only dropped by once each for legal stuff - no warm visits. One kid planned to deliver photos but asked us to give them instead of visiting, citing COVID. My coworker guilt-tripped her about her lonely mom eagerly waiting all week.
I stepped in and told the kid I was sorry and reminded my coworker: if all 5 kids avoid their parent, that says more about the parent than the kids. I got a warning but it felt worth it.
Update: The kid thanked me and complained about my coworker, who got an apology and was warned to be less judgmental around residents and family.

Good parenting means loving your kid for who they are, not just because they make you look good or boost your ego. Unfortunately, narcissistic parents see their kids as trophies instead of people.

They expect their kids to stay in their shadow, act a certain way, and never have their own dreams. It’s less love and more control disguised as parenting.

Finally Saw My Childhood Through My Daughter’s Eyes — It Broke Me

Finally Saw My Childhood Through My Daughter’s Eyes — It Broke Me

    Alternative_Lack_404 , Thomas Iversen Report

I spent years telling myself my narcissistic parents would be different with my daughter. That they’d love her more, be better grandparents.
Then one day, my six-year-old stepped on some egg yolk at my parents’ farm. Out of nowhere, my dad yelled that she was "not normal" and scared her so bad she hid under the kitchen table.
Hearing her fear and confusion shattered me. It hit me all over again - this was never normal.
I immediately blocked him and told my mom I’d call the cops if anyone hurt my daughter. She was confused - I thought you’d be grateful, mom - but I’m not.
My daughter doesn’t understand this kind of rage because she’s never felt it before. I’m finally proud, not guilty. She’ll never be alone with them again. The cycle ends with me.

Parents Cooked My Pet Rabbit And Told Me To Eat It. Yep, That Happened.

    theredqueentheory , Gundula Vogel Report

When I was 7, my pet rabbit Daisy lived in a cage outside. I loved and cared for her every day.
One day, my abusive parents thought she was 'too much work,' and without telling me, cooked her for dinner.
They didn’t tell me until after I’d eaten. Then they asked how it tasted and laughed as I cried, feeling like I’d eaten my baby.
Then they got mad at me for crying. I still feel horrible about it, even though I know it wasn’t my fault.
This is one of the many reasons I’m no contact with them now. How sick is that?

Mom Is Threatening To Sue Me For Stopping Her Monthly Cash

    ImpossiblePassion861 , zavalishina Report

I gave my mom $500 a month for 5 years to help with bills. She told me she was struggling.
Turns out, she owns her house, has a pension, and wanted extra spending money.
When I stopped paying, she lost it and called me ungrateful, abandoning her, the usual guilt trip.
Then I got a lawyer’s letter: she’s suing me for emotional distress and financial damages because I “promised” to support her. I never promised anything.
My lawyer says it’s a BS lawsuit, but I have to respond. It’s costing me money while my mom tries to manipulate me for cash.

One classic red flag: when parents try to live their lives through their kids. They push them toward goals that make *them* look good, not their kids happy.

And if a kid starts stealing the spotlight? Expect some serious shade thrown their way to keep them in line. Imagine your success making your parent jealous - yikes!

My Brother Passed Away, And My Parents Cared More About Their Image Than Him

My Brother Passed Away, And My Parents Cared More About Their Image Than Him

    waterp00p , Pavel Danilyuk Report

My brother ended his life at 18. We just had the funeral.
My parents wanted a family get-together, but it turned into a screaming match.
They said my brother’s death made them look like terrible parents and wished they'd never had him.
At the same time, they cursed their living kids for calling out their toxic behavior.
Apparently, their “perfect parent” image was shattered, and that upset them more than losing their son.

Dad Fumes When I Refuse To Name My Baby After Him

    Successful-Rough-519 , Matilda Wormwood Report

I’m 28 weeks pregnant with a boy and we picked out the perfect name: Oliver James. Oliver is my late husband’s amazing grandpa, and James is a name we love.
My dad found out and got mad. He said we should name the baby after him (he’s David) since he’s the grandfather, because “that’s what you’re supposed to do.”
I reminded him my husband has family too and we wanted a name meaningful to us.
He flipped, saying he’s done so much for me and this is how I repay him - by “erasing” him.
Mom suggested a compromise (David as a middle name), but I said no. Dad stormed out and has since bombarded me with guilt trips and demands for a reshoot. Nope, Oliver James stays.

My Husband Called Out My Narc Parents At Christmas, And It Changed Everything

lovelitchiheart , RDNE Stock project Report

Growing up, my mom invented an imaginary sibling named Justice to compare me to, always pointing out how I wasn’t like Justice.
At one Christmas with my now-husband, my parents started telling “cute childhood anecdotes” including Justice.
My husband looked at them and quietly said, “You know that’s not normal, right?”
The shock was amazing - my parents literally shut down.
This was the first time anyone ever stood up to their behavior, and it opened my eyes to their toxicity.
Six months later after a crushing event, I went no-contact. My husband’s support helped me break free and heal.

DorianPavass , Pedro H. Novais Report

As a teenager, I got diverticulitis but my dad said I was faking - even when I was delirious with pain and fever.
It was my siblings begging that finally got me to the hospital. Doctors said I would’ve died soon without treatment.
I developed chronic fatigue and other health problems from the neglect.
Recently, my dad got diverticulitis but got early care and walked away fine.
I feel bitter and angry for my teen self who wasn’t believed while he got the help he deserved.

My Alcoholic Mom Ruined My 3-Year-Old's Christmas Eve — And I'm Heartbroken

    Eli122333 , Chad Madden Report

My mom has battled alcohol and stayed with us over Christmas because of car trouble.
She started drinking early and got drunk fast.
By my toddler’s bedtime, she was sloshed and started a loud, aggressive tirade.
She tried to storm into my daughter’s room, so I physically removed her and drove her home - while she screamed and tried to throw herself out of the car.
I’m heartbroken. There was a “good mom” once, but she’s gone. My partner and I agreed she can’t be trusted with our daughter anymore.

My Dad Spied On Me Through My Car For 7 Years. Yep, Creepy.

    soyevaflaminghot , Ketut Subiyanto Report

When I got my first car at 18, my dad gave it to me but secretly installed GPS, microphones, and cameras to spy on me.
He'd even remotely shut the car off as punishment, blaming dead batteries.
Recently, my husband and I found the hidden trackers and when my husband started removing them, dad shut the car off remotely.

I Finally Told My Mom What 9-Year-Old Me Wanted To Say

    tambourine_goddess , Getty Images Report

I got engaged in 2022. My mom pretended to be happy but really acted annoyed about everything - from no engagement shoot to not disinviting her enemy.
She ignored me and my family for 3.5 years, including the birth of my child.
Then, she suddenly wanted to meet up - but cancelled last minute without remorse.
When she asked to reschedule only when convenient to her, I sent the message 9-year-old me couldn’t say:

“No. After ignoring me so long, you had zero respect for me or my family, used emotional manipulation to control me, and I won’t accept it. Until you show genuine change and emotional health, don’t contact me.”
It was scary but needed. The little girl who felt invisible finally got heard. We’re free.

    Able_Claim_3097 , olia danilevich Report

My narcissistic mom has been no contact with me for 8 years but tried applying to be a foster parent to get a “do over” kid.
The agency contacted adult children of applicants. I told them all about her abuse and neglect.
Two weeks later, my sister got impatient, called them, and they confirmed the application was denied due to red flags.
I had little faith in the system but this time they actually listened. At least those kids are safe from her.

My dad, who stayed with us, barged in angry about his sleep being disrupted.
After a stern talk, he said my mom gave me sedatives as a baby to stop me from waking them every hour.

Mom’s Social Media Obsession Hits Peak Crazy: Quitting Her Job To Be An Influencer

    Sensitive-Excuse9172 Report

Mom’s Instagram post went viral with 300k views, and she’s hooked.
She thinks she’s a genius and is quitting her job to be a content creator.
Her plan? Use AI filters, review luxury stuff, get freebies, and make thousands - with minimal work.
She’s worried about running out of space because brands will send her loads of free perks.
It’s absurd, yet somehow typical of her delusions.

My Therapist Figured Out Why I'm Afraid Of Butterflies, And It’s Mind-Blowing

    Rude_Calligrapher712 Report

I’ve feared butterflies forever, finding their hairy bodies and erratic flying terrifying.
My therapist asked what unpredictability scared me in life, and what’s fake behind the shiny surface.
Then it hit me: it’s my mom’s random, terrifying tantrums in our ‘perfect’ family.
My butterfly fear wasn’t about butterflies at all - it was a symbol of my childhood fear of mom.

My Mom Posted My Brother’s Suicide Note On Facebook — And It’s Horrible

    plumbus_hun Report

Recently, my narcissistic mom posted my brother’s suicide note on Facebook.
The note was meant for his wife and kids, not her.
She had to get the note from the police; they hadn’t seen each other for 1.5 years due to her bad behavior.
I was offered to read it but chose not to since it isn’t addressed to me.
Posting something so private online feels like another cruel and selfish act.

Why Kids Of Narc Parents Struggle To Learn Life Skills

    No-Guidance-2399 Report

Kids of narcissistic parents often don’t learn life skills properly.
These parents do everything themselves - not to help, but to control.
Even asking a simple question risks abuse or being misunderstood.
They never teach independence and expect total obedience.
This leaves kids unprepared and frustrated as they grow up.

Kept Baby’s Birth Private And Now My Parents Are Furious

    anon Report

My husband and I decided to keep our baby’s birth private - no visitors during delivery.
We waited about 24 hours before letting anyone know to avoid surprises.
Husband’s family was excited. My parents? Furious.
Dad yelled that we should be ashamed for telling them late despite ‘everything they did for me.’
Mom sent guilt trips about our decision.
Next day, Dad accused me of abuse and said my husband mistreated me - which is untrue.
I’m heartbroken but firm on my boundaries.

Started Working Out Again, Mom ‘Goes To Sleep’ At 6PM

    uaroxsox Report

I moved in with my mom and we bonded over drinks. I drank too much and gained 40 pounds.
Deciding to get healthier, I joined a gym.
Mom hated it, said I was wasting money.
Since then, she ‘goes to sleep’ early and ignores me.
I feel like she’s punishing me for trying to improve myself.
It’s hard to explain but it hurts a lot.
