Making a playground isn’t as easy as it looks. It’s way more than just throwing a slide and sandbox together and calling it a day.

After World War II, kids found the coolest playgrounds ever - bombsites full of rubble! That rough playground taught grown-ups something important: kids love making their own games with whatever’s around.

That idea turned into adventure playgrounds, starting in Denmark in 1943. Instead of structured stuff, kids got heaps of random junk to build and play however they pleased.

The UK got in on this after borrowing the idea, and suddenly, playgrounds were all about imagination and mess.

By the late 20th century, safety freaks and lawsuits kinda sucked the fun out of playgrounds. One big kid fall in Chicago led to a whopping $9.5 million payout, and playgrounds got way more rule-booky.

Oh, and then plastic took over. Mass-produced playground sets popped up everywhere, turning playgrounds into uniform playground-ville.

That colorful, plastic castle look became the norm, and kids everywhere sighed.

Adventure playgrounds got less popular, sadly. No more piles of random junk letting kids invent wild games. It was all about neat, official, and ‘safe’ instead.

But wait! The playground world is waking up again. Some places are tossing in natural stuff and toys that change every time kids show up.
