These days, snapping a pic is as easy as pulling out your phone and tapping the screen (or ten times). Scientists counted roughly 4.7 billion photos taken every single day on smartphones alone. Yep, billions! And probably a ton of those are just accidental shots of pockets or sleepy cats.
But it wasn’t always this simple. Long ago, the closest thing to a camera was basically a dark magic box called a camera obscura. It projected images onto a wall or surface but couldn’t save them. So people had to get crafty to figure out how to stick these images to something permanent.
Enter Mr. Nicéphore Niépce in 1827! He made the world’s oldest surviving photo using that camera obscura thing. Fast forward to 1839, and Louis Daguerre whipped up a process that turned pictures into super detailed silver plates - basically, old-school Instagram filters but without the app!
Photography got a whole lot easier in 1888 when George Eastman unleashed the Kodak camera. It came with film for 100 shots, and to get new pictures you sent the entire camera back to Kodak. Talk about a mail-in photo service!
The Leica I popped up in 1925 and shrank cameras down to portable sizes, making it a street photographer’s best friend. Suddenly, catching spontaneous moments was a breeze, and the world got way more candid.
Color photos made their debut in 1907 thanks to the Lumière brothers with something called Autochrome. The results rocked, but color photography was still a bit of a hassle until decades later when family albums started to brighten up.
Autofocus cameras hit the scene in 1977, meaning photographers could finally chill while the camera did the focusing job. Around that time, early digital cameras also showed up, though they looked more like toasters and took black-and-white pics that were pretty pixelated!
