Compared to old countries overseas, the U.S. is pretty much a youngster. Being just about 250 years old means it’s been growing and changing fast! Cities especially have exploded from small towns into giant, bustling places full of highways and tons of homes. But hey, the big stars have shifted over time - some old favorites got overshadowed by shiny new cities.
Small towns still rock those dirt roads, but big city life? Oh, it’s a whole new world now.
Back in the day, places like New York City, Philly, Boston, Charleston, and Baltimore were the cool kids on the block. They’re still important, but now cities like Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Houston are grabbing the spotlight. From 1978 to 2010, some cities lost their shine in the economy game, while others shot up fast. Detroit and its pals had a rough time, but cities like DC and Dallas jumped ahead.
And guess what? This makeover party isn’t stopping. Cities like Boise, Provo, Lakeland, Austin, and Huntsville are changing at lightning speed, thanks to more jobs, more people, and just more buzz. That usually means more fun stuff and a happier vibe - who wouldn’t want that?
Oh, and highways? Those suckers transformed America big time. From the '50s to the '70s, the country added about 48,000 miles of roads! That helped folks get from small towns to big cities easily and live suburban dreams without giving up the city hustle. But uh-oh, not all changes were totally fair.
A historian spilled the tea to Vox: these highways often bulldozed through neighborhoods of folks with less power, while the rich and powerful got to keep their nice streets intact. The result? Major damage mostly hit disenfranchised communities. So yeah, not all shining shiny changes.
Still, American cities probably won’t stop evolving anytime soon. There’s this cool trend toward making cities more walkable - fewer cars, more strolling and biking. Builders are starting to build smaller homes in neighborhoods where you can actually walk to stuff. Plus, more than half of Americans say they’d totally move to somewhere with a smaller yard if it meant they could walk everywhere instead of driving. Change is definitely in the air!
