David Markowitz from the University of Oregon probed into how we lie online and on the phone – turns out, we fib a lot more where no one’s recording.
Turns out, we’re not all Master Liars in every chat. People lied the most in phone calls or video chats (no recording, no proof!). But in emails, people barely lied at all. Crazy, right? The biggest surprise? Some people lie a lot, others barely - so it’s not a one-size-fits-all.
Michigan State University asked 1,000 grown-ups how many lies they told in one day. More than half said zero lies! Those who did lie mostly told just a few tiny fibs.
Turns out, a tiny group of people told half the lies. So basically, most of us keep it real.
Curious if this lying habit is the same worldwide? Researchers asked people from China, Germany, Mexico, Israel, Kenya, Russia, and Brazil how often they fibbed over a day.
Results? Kenyans seemed to be a bit more fibby, while China’s stats looked a lot like the U.S. It’s a mixed bag depending on where you’re at!
The University of Wisconsin took it up a notch - tracking lies every single day for three months. They found even the most honest folks have off days, and the biggest liars sometimes tell fewer fibs. Who knew honesty could be so... unpredictable?
