One time at a nursing home, a patient had a massive sore on his butt. The wound nurse played doctor and gave weird orders like "just pack it with saline-soaked gauze" instead of the proper vacuum treatment. It got worse, way worse. When the original nurse came back from maternity leave, the sore was a disgusting green mess smelling so bad it was basically rotten. The poor guy went septic and passed away. The nurse got fired, but apparently still keeps her license. Yikes.

A patient had gangrene so bad in her legs that she was crawling around her apartment. The smell took over the whole unit. Nurses tried peppermint oil masks to survive changing her dressings. Honestly, we were all kind of scared her leg might just fall off during the procedure. She was super scared of surgery and took days to finally agree to it.

A guy came in with a leg cast he'd never taken off for almost six months. He said he just felt a little tickle. Turns out maggots had made a party inside the cast! It smelled awful, but those creepy crawlies actually helped by eating dead tissue and probably saved him from a serious infection. He just said, "Oh, that’s why it felt heavy." Talk about weird!

One older guy had skin cancer growing unchecked for decades—it basically necrotized half his head! The cancer went from his eye corner all the way to the back of his head. The ear was gone, too. His wife just covered it with a hat when he went out and he refused to see a doctor for 50 years. Talk about dedication to denial.

A homeless guy came in wearing about 10 pairs of socks stacked up. When the socks came off... all the flesh on his feet was gone. No kidding. His metatarsal bones were fully exposed! He didn’t even realize because he’d gone years without taking his socks off. Maggots probably helped clean things up, but still—gross and sad.

An 18-month-old baby came in super dirty, with shop towels tied on as a diaper. When nurses peeled the makeshift diaper away, they found the whole diaper area was one huge infected wound, like severe burns. The poor baby screamed so loud it broke hearts. After 7 months in the hospital and surgeries, they finally got better. Then there was another patient living in a hoarded house with maggot-infested leg ulcers so bad they could only be treated on the porch. Gross and heartbreaking.
