Bye Bye Guest Room, Hello Playroom!

Bye Bye Guest Room, Hello Playroom!

Feisty_platypus1000 , Clay Banks Report

So, my MIL turned into a full-on nightmare since baby arrived about a year ago. Hubby kept pushing for her to stay in our guest room to help me after delivery, but honestly? I wasn't having it. No way I wanted her hovering during my most vulnerable time.

We debated forever about keeping the guest room or nixing it. I was DONE hosting overnight guests once I became a mom. Plus, our family lives pretty close (MIL’s the farthest at about 1.5 hours). Overnight stays? Totally unnecessary. Finally, we agreed to take out the guest bed and turn that room into a playroom. Game changer! I’m honestly over the moon at never hosting anyone overnight again.

Had to share my little victory today.

MIL Grounding Her 33-Year-Old Son Like a Teen!

MIL Grounding Her 33-Year-Old Son Like a Teen!

    Snuddlest_Buttercup , Getty Images Report

My 33-year-old husband was visiting his 75-year-old mother for a work trip. This only happens a couple times a year and now it might be the last time.

She’s always been nuts, but this time she was in snoop mode nonstop. He was on a call with our insurance company, walking in the door when she left it open… then slammed it in his face. He said “Oh sh*t!” and she hissed, “No swearing in my house.” He shot back, “You scared me!”

She followed him around, trying to side-eavesdrop on his phone call from outside the bedroom. When he called her out, they fought. Finally she declared, “That’s it! You’re grounded!” He shouted, “I’m 33!” She snapped, “No Xbox for a week.” Then he left.

MIL Thinks I'm an Alcoholic for a Sip of Wine While Breastfeeding

MIL Thinks I'm an Alcoholic for a Sip of Wine While Breastfeeding

    blamemombo , Hans Report

So apparently, having a glass of wine or cocktail at a restaurant while breastfeeding my 3-month-old makes me an alcoholic, according to MIL.

Listen, I pump ahead of time and have a little stash just for those occasions. The science says wait about 2 hours per drink - simple math! I even tried explaining how alcohol works in blood and breastmilk but she just wouldn’t have it.

She went on and on about her family’s “genetic problems” like her father and ex-husband were alcoholics. When I asked if she was calling me one, she just shot me a look and said, “Being a mom means sacrifices.” Eye roll.#NotTodayMIL

I’m so over these old-school myths. Told her if she’s gonna judge my choices, I’m shutting down the info flow.

MIL Lost My $200 Wedding Dress Jacket and Plays the Victim

MIL Lost My $200 Wedding Dress Jacket and Plays the Victim

    JHoot2022 , JSB Co. Report

So, I got hitched on June 13th and sneakily stored my wedding dress at the in-laws so hubby wouldn’t see it. When I grabbed it the day before the wedding, it was taken out of MY garment bag and shoved inside a trash bag. Didn’t panic, just steamed out the wrinkles.

Then we noticed the jacket was missing - no idea where. MIL swears it wasn’t there when she moved it because trash bags were apparently better for transport. Ok…?

I kept cool, found a fix, but the whole family acted like I was the villain, refused to speak to me at the reception, and shamed me for asking MIL to apologize. She denies any fault. Honestly, I just don’t want to be around any of them anymore.

MIL Won’t Shut Up About My Breastfeeding Baby

MIL Won’t Shut Up About My Breastfeeding Baby

    babymomma24 , Getty Images Report

So my healthy 2-month-old isn’t getting enough nutrition - or so says MIL. Back in her day, babies choked down bottles mixed with cereal, Tylenol, oatmeal, random whatever. Modern medicine? Nah, she says the doc’s wrong and needs a refresher course.

Every time baby fusses she blames me for not adding rice cereal to the bottle instead of breastfeeding. She’s analyzing baby poop like it’s a science project, complaining it’s “too runny” and not solid enough.

She insists baby doesn’t need reflux meds and accuses me of overfeeding by nursing every 1.5 to 2 hours. I’m this close to snatching the crying baby out of her arms.

Oh, and I overheard her telling people my baby cries non-stop. Like, seriously?? What’s wrong with her?

Ex In-Law Suddenly Wants to Be BFFs Over Grandkid

Ex In-Law Suddenly Wants to Be BFFs Over Grandkid

    Lopsided-Hat806 , Daiga Ellaby Report

    Just need to vent.

My ex-MIL never once respected me during the marriage. Her son cheated on me and she’s all about defending him like he’s some flawless angel. He sees our kid once every couple weeks for an hour, supervised only. He cancels often and probably couldn’t name the size of his kid’s clothes or diapers.

I’m guessing ex-MIL has zero clue about his involvement given her rant. She only learned about the divorce months ago but decided to ghost me instead of reaching out.

Then she texts me begging for baby info, implying I’m keeping her grandchild away. Seriously? After 9 months of radio silence, she wants to be the doting grandma? Nope. Told her I don’t owe any relationship for people who’ve disrespected me.

Husband and I are civil but he’s got parenting work ahead. She definitely hasn’t earned her place in our kid’s life based on her behavior.

Finally Called Out MIL for Calling MY Babies "Her Babies"

Finally Called Out MIL for Calling MY Babies "Her Babies"

    Individual-Sleep-697 , Hans Report

At last, I called out my MIL for calling my kiddos HER babies. She strolls in, my toddler’s crying, and she goes, “Oh no, my baby is crying!” I was like, “Is your baby crying? Nope, looks like my baby!”

Then she ambles over and says, “Oh, hello my babies... oh wait, GRANDbabies.” Finally! She actually said it right.

It’s not rocket science! Proud of myself for finally standing up - just took 16 months to grow a backbone.

MIL Wants to Wear a Wedding Dress... But Says My Dress Don’t Have to Be White?!

MIL Wants to Wear a Wedding Dress... But Says My Dress Don’t Have to Be White?!

    Direct_Local_6094 , user17581499 Report

So my mother-in-law, 61, decided to wear an off-white dress to our civil ceremony. She kept insisting, “It’s beige,” like that makes it okay, while telling me I don’t need a white dress for my own wedding?!

She even sent me pictures of “options for me” to choose from, which were these hideous, colorful cocktail dresses.

The thing is, her dress looks like something I could wear on my wedding day - lacey, beachy vibe included. If you told me it was the bridal dress, I’d say “Yass queen!”

I feel totally weird about this. Am I the crazy one? When my fiancé told her this was weird, she flipped, saying he needed glasses and sent side-by-side pics of her “beige” dress next to a white one. Just today she went to the store, snapped photos comparing the dresses, and texted him, “See! It’s beige! Not white!”

Honestly, she’s trolling me. It’s wedding drama overload. What do you think?

MIL’s Babysitting Invasion: No Off Switch!

MIL’s Babysitting Invasion: No Off Switch!

    Safe_Pool_9454 , Valeriia Miller Report

My MIL has always been a little too much. When we got married, my husband and I had a long chat to set boundaries. She used to show up with groceries, wanting to do our laundry and cooking. I’m the housewife here and was confused why she never asked if we wanted her help. She got offended but accepted I do it now.

Fast forward three years - we had our first baby. MIL buttered me up during pregnancy with gifts and compliments, but at 2 weeks postpartum, she asked if she could come over every day! I said no way, we settled on once a week.

When she’s here, she bulldozes me, plays house with my baby, and refuses to give her back when she cries. Our baby is seriously clingy and colicky, so it’s stressful. I told her bluntly: 'Give her back when she’s upset.' Next visit? Same pestering behavior.

My husband plans to hit pause on visits until we’re ready. Is that too harsh? The weekly stress is killing me.

Pregnant and MIL Is Calling Me Fat…Again.

    stacyannxxx , Ivana Cajina Report

So I’m 26 weeks pregnant, and my MIL and FIL won’t let up on the “fat” comments. Stuff like how big I’m getting, laughing about seeing my stomach.

I always calmly say I don’t appreciate it, but it’s really messing with my head.

My husband (only child) promises to talk to them anytime I complain, though he’s usually not around when the comments fly.

The last straw? MIL yelled, "Your bum is FAT! It must be a boy!" and laughed maniacally.

Hubby finally told her off (after I cried in the car), but now he’s all upset because he had to be the bad guy and is not talking to me. It’s tense and really upsetting.

MIL’s Weird Obsession with Circumcision (and Vaccines!)

MIL’s Weird Obsession with Circumcision (and Vaccines!)

    ConstantClient7504 , Helena Lopes Report

Had my baby about 6 months ago and went no contact with MIL because of this stuff. MIL’s obsessed with his, um, manhood. When I was pregnant, we decided not to circumcise. MIL was NOT happy.

She kept saying it’s gross, dirty, risky when he’s older - basically all kinds of horror stories. Our research says the risks of keeping him intact are minimal, so we stood firm.

She also tried to convince me not to vaccinate (which is bizarre because doctors use local anesthesia for circumcision anyway). We chose to vaccinate and went no contact before she even met the baby.

When we brought baby home, she even asked if the pediatrician could just do it, ignoring our choice. Like, why do you care so much about our son's privates?

MIL’s Weight Comments: The Never-Ending Saga

MIL’s Weight Comments: The Never-Ending Saga

    ChemistryNo6005 , Thirdman Report

Here’s a small but annoying one. Had dinner with in-laws and MIL kept pushing me to drink wine. I said no thanks several times, but she kept saying, "It’s just one glass."

Next morning, MIL looks at me and says, "You look tired and swollen." Then she points to her chin, says it’s getting fuller. Like, what am I supposed to say before coffee?

This isn’t new. She comments on my stomach, face, drinks, or how I used to look, always pretending she’s just chatting casually.

DH told her to stop body-shaming me, but she acted like we were overreacting. Now I’m stuck second-guessing myself thinking about my chin instead of realizing she’s just way too comfortable judging my body.

I don’t want to guess whether one glass of wine or one plate of food will spark next-day comments. How do you deal without giving MIL the reaction-she-wants?

MIL Crossed the Line and I Froze… Now What?

    Workingprobozo , Getty Images Report

We have a 10-month-old and the number one rule since day one has been: NO KISSING. I’ve been firm on this and fought with MIL about it. Hubby has always backed me up.

So today she’s blowing raspberries on the baby’s belly and I’m like fine... but then she moves to his neck and cheek. I just froze. SUCH a dumb move.

Hubby didn’t see it from his angle, but I’m so mad at myself for not stopping her. I can’t believe she broke the rule.

Thought things were getting better but now I’m so upset. How do we even move forward? If we bring it up she’ll deny everything.

All I want is a good cry right now.

    Birthday Blues: MIL’s Heartless Traditions

    Birthday Blues: MIL’s Heartless Traditions

    HobbitQueen8 , Ethan Sykes Report

I hate my MIL. Thought I was over it thanks to NC, but then my SO said something this morning about his birthdays. Cue new hurt.

He moved here in 2019, and I’ve been trying my best to make his birthdays special. They never cared - once even making a lame comment that felt like a slap in the face.

One year, he told everyone he expected a surprise birthday dinner. He turned down multiple invites that day. It ended with MIL showing up at midnight and tossing a rushed birthday card at him. It broke my heart.

He shared how he doesn’t even look forward to his birthday anymore. This year, I had big plans - our last before baby #2 - but now I feel like it doesn’t matter.

I’m thinking therapy for him again once health insurance kicks in. Nothing I did seems to make a dent.

And I bet MIL will send another giant card filled with “You’re so lucky to have us” notes. Ugh. Papercuts forever.

MIL Started Opening Fancy 'Trump' Accounts For My Kids Without Asking!

    thriftygal43ver , karlyukav Report

My in-laws are boundary pros - except not the good kind. MIL texts me links about tr*mp accounts then says “Grandpa’s opening one for the kids!”

I reply, “Grandpa can’t do anything without our permission.”

She snaps back, “Then open one yourself!” and calls me to explain how the kids will get $250k from the government and be millionaires by 18. Sounds great, but I’m skeptical - politics aside.

This isn’t the first boundary fail. She’s tried opening credit cards for my toddler to buy toys! Yep, really.

Did I overreact setting boundaries, or is this normal? They flip the script and call me mean when I stand up for myself.

MIL’s Outrageous Take: No Nanny? No Kids!

MIL’s Outrageous Take: No Nanny? No Kids!

    Illustrious-Maize395 , Drazen Zigic Report

Another classic MIL gem dropped during dinner while hubby, baby, and I just sat there.

We’re sorting childcare for my return to work. MIL instantly yelled, “Don’t EVER send him to daycare!” Okay...

We looked into sitters and nannies (aka sky-high prices), and she bragged about hiring “illegals” when she had kids because they were “much cheaper,” along with racist, nasty comments about nanny nationalities.

She’s also super possessive over my baby, snatching him out of my arms at every visit - even during naps.

Once, she showed up with “gifts” that turned out to be nursery decorations she bought without telling me and just marched in sticking wall decals and hammering nails.

Keep in mind, this was when I was just 2 months postpartum, barely surviving while hubby was back at work.

    Non-confrontational me feels like exploding!

MIL and The Baby Gender Drama

    chlorinedrinker232 Report

I’m 30 with two boys, 3 and 1.5 years. My husband’s only sibling, his 35-year-old sister, struggled with infertility and finally had a baby boy too - making six grandsons in her family, no girls.

MIL said she wished her daughter had a girl, knowing how special it’d be. I said gender doesn’t matter, and I might still have a girl.

She replied, “No, you won’t have girls, just boys. You’ll be like Dalma,” her sister with four boys and no daughters.

Fast forward: I’m pregnant and she keeps insisting it’s a boy. Our test came back: It’s a girl! She’s happy but lowkey seems mad I’m having a girl instead of her daughter.

She’s always had this weird competitive vibe. What’s up with this?

Am I Nuts or Just a Protective Mom With Trust Issues?

    FantasticCabinet656 Report

Quick background: My in-laws live 4 hours away by plane; my parents are 20 minutes by car.

Been with SO for 15 years, both were kid-no thinkers until our friends’ twins changed everything. Now we have a one-year-old, cared for by my close-by parents.

In-laws constantly complain we don’t visit, but have only come once since baby’s birth.

We lucked into event tickets nearby their place. They want to watch baby while we go, but they barely babysit anymore (he’s their only grandkid). Plus time zones might mess things up.

They accuse me of being controlling. I worry they can’t handle it, call us out early, or worse, not call and baby gets upset or hurt.

Suggested a trial babysitting lunch, but MIL said it’s selfish, and their time with us is limited.

Is it crazy to not trust them without a trial? Hit me with the truth.

Is My MIL Trying to Hijack My Wedding?

    Pressure_washer Report

Am I overreacting or is my MIL turning my wedding into her personal runway?

It’s a barn wedding with a cocktail casual dress code - not black tie.

First, she dropped over $5,000 trying on multiple “perfect” dresses. Okay, but that feels WAY over the top for our vibe.

Second, I booked hair and makeup for me and bridesmaids months ago. MIL wants to join the glam squad, but honestly? Nope, I want that time with my girls. My own mom isn’t even doing hair and makeup.

Lastly, her mom hates our food, so MIL is cooking an entire separate meal for her crew to bring to the reception. It’s like they want THEIR party waiting for us.

Not huge individually, but together it feels like the spotlight’s shifting from us to her. Would you be annoyed too?
