Emily Hartop, a real bug-whisperer, says a lot of Earth’s friends are basically mystery species. We don’t know who they are, where they hang out, or what tricks they pull! Earth is basically a giant secret party of unknown creatures.
Back in the day, Emily and her team set up bug traps all over Los Angeles and caught a swarm of tiny flies. Out of 99 species, 43 were brand new to science! Talk about backyard treasures.
Thanks to fancy DNA tech, scientists can now scan tons of critters all at once, spotting new species faster than ever. It’s like speed dating but for bugs and animals. This is why many believe we’re in a "Golden Age" of discovering weird and wonderful life forms. Spoiler: there’s lots more cool creatures out there waiting for their spotlight.
